Writing an E-Newsletter

An e-newsletter is a newsletter about your business and is emailed to the subscribers on a regular basis. It is an effective and inexpensive tool to establish your personal brand or increase brand awareness and reach a larger audience. It encourages subscribed users to make an action, whether it is to buy a product, avail a service, fill up a form, or inform their friends about your business.

An e-newsletter is a great way to promote what you offer, connect with your target market, and hopefully increase sales. Here are some tips when writing an e-newsletter:

  • The subject line should be able to attract your reader's attention. Keep it short (about 60 characters) so the reader will know what it is about before actually opening the email.
  • If there's any consolation on unread e-newsletters, it's the fact that the subject line with the name of your business can still contribute to brand recall.
  • Make it personal. Use the name of the subscriber in your greeting.
  • Keep it fresh. Always have something new to offer. People will not actually spend time reading about something they already know.
  • Keep it short, simple, and easy to understand. Short sentences, bullet points, and larger fonts for the headings can help make the entire e-newsletter more reader-friendly. Also, make it as short as possible.
  • Include a call to action box or statement. At the bottom of the e-newsletter, you can include information on how the reader can contact you in case he or she has comments or questions. You may also put an "email to a friend" icon.
  • Be true to your word. E-newsletters should be sent on a regular basis. If you inform your subscribers that they will receive the e-newsletter every month, keep it that way. Build credibility and trust by being truthful to your subscribers.
  • Give the subscribers an option to stop their e-newsletter subscription. If a subscriber does not want to receive e-newsletters, make it easy for him or her to unsubscribe. Otherwise, you might lose your credibility.
  • Get feedback. Take subscribers' comments into consideration. They might have some great ideas on how to make your e-newsletter better and more reader-friendly.
