As the name implies, banner advertising makes use of banner ads. When you click on a banner ad, the browser will bring you to the site of the advertiser.

Banner ads are usually rectangular in shape or in boxes and can contain more than the ad text. Advertisers use a combination of text and images or graphics to attract attention.

Here are the common types of banners based on how ads are displayed:

Traditional banner ad – most common, usually rectangular in shape
In-line ad – displayed in a column at the right or left side of the web page
Pop-up ad – found in a small window that appears over the web page you are visiting, can include Flash animation and/or video
